Membership 

As a member you have the unique opportunity to play an active role in the prevention and reduction of tobacco use among Johnson County youth and adults.  As a member you will have the opportunity to:

  1. Receive up-to-date information on local, state, and national legislative actions
  2. Receive training or how to be a more effective tobacco control advocate
  3. Participate in a variety of community volunteer opportunities
  4. Enjoy the support of other local tobacco control advocates

bulletWhat is the time commitment?
bulletWe welcome all levels of membership participation!  As a member you are not necessarily committed to attending each monthly meeting or participating in every volunteer event.  Instead you determine your activity level.

 

bullet What are some ways I can become involved?
bulletAdvocacy Team

Role: Identify and pursue opportunities to educate local, county and state elected officials about tobacco control initiatives including excise tax increases, clean indoor air legislation, and comprehensive tobacco control funding

Tactics: Email campaigns, letters to the editor, petition drives, attendance at legislative forums, city council and county supervisor meetings, and attending events at the state capitol

Regular Meeting Time: None, only occasional strategy sessions

Communication: Primarily email, some phone calls

Training Required: CAFE Volunteer Orientation (1 hr), Advocacy training

 

bulletCommunity Ambassadors

Role: Raise awareness of CAFE and educate about tobacco control in the county by participating in activities and events

Tactics: Community and university events

Regular Meeting Time: None, participate as available for activities/events

Communication: Primarily email, some phone calls

Training Required: CAFE Volunteer Orientation (1 hr)

Role: Teens and adults interested in youth tobacco issues providing direction to efforts targeting youth

Tactics: JEL, YEL, street marketing activities, Kick Butts Day, Tar War program, Great American Smokeout

Regular Meeting Time: Bi-monthly

Communication: Emails, phone calls

Training Required: CAFE Youth Orientation (1 hr) or CAFE Volunteer Orientation (1 hr)

 

bulletImpact Team

Role: Assist with organizational functions

Tactics: Data entry and database management, website maintenance, newsletter production, membership follow-up

Regular Meeting Time: Weekly or monthly schedule of office hours

Communication: Office interaction with staff

Training Required: CAFE Volunteer Orientation (1 hr), GiftWorks database training (1 hr), FrontPage website design software (must have previous knowledge)
