Clean Air For Everyone is our mantra
We worked hard to get the Iowa Smoke-Free Air Act passed, and it was in July of 2008. But our work is not done yet:
- The teen smoking rate is not declining
- Smoke-free tobacco use is growing
- Children are still exposed to second-hand smoke in their homes and cars
- 80% of Iowans who smoke want to quit
Clean Air For Everyone (CAFE) is dedicated to helping residents of Johnson County achieve and maintain freedom from tobacco and secondhand smoke. We offer tips on quitting, resources for staying tobacco-free, youth and teen activities and involvement. and state and local advocacy Clean Air For Everyone serves Johnson and Poweshiek counties. Our goals are:
- Prevent initiation of tobacco use by youth
- Reduce exposure to secondhand smoke
- Promote cessation among young people and adults
- Maintain a tobacco control community coalition
Casino workers wanted
In casinos, smoking is still legal under the two-year old Iowa Smoke Free Air Act. They represent the few indoor locations where you can still smoke. The logic of this exemption is a bit fuzzy, as it is not a proven fact that those who like to gamble also like to smoke.
What is proven are the health risks and toxic environments that casino employees endure because of this exemption from the Smoke Free act. These employees deserve all the protection that the Act affords to employees at other offices, factories, and establishments.
That is why there is a move to close this loophole. A grassroots effort has sprung up to lobby legislators about closing the casino loophole.
We are looking for casino employees who are willing to speak at hearings, write letters and lobby their congressmen. If you are a casino employee or know of someone who would be willing to speak out about the smoking that goes on in casinos, then give us a call or email. We need your help!
